Violent Bay of Bengal Storm Approaches! Schools Shut, Rescue Fleets Deployed Ahead of Oct 28 Strike!

A massive weather emergency looms over South and East India as a intensifying deep depression over the Bay of Bengal brews into a formidable cyclonic storm named ‘Arnab’. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an official warning, forecasting that the cyclone is slated to make landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam along the Andhra Pradesh coast by the forenoon of October 28. At the time of landfall, the storm is expected to unleash fierce sustained winds ranging from 115 to 125 kmph, with gusts spiraling up to a dangerous 140 kmph. The cascading impact of the approaching system is already shaking coastal belts in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Odisha, triggering heavy rainfall and strong squalls. In response to the imminent threat, a high-severity ‘Red Alert’ has been slapped across five key Odisha districts: Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri. Forecasters warn of extreme rainfall exceeding 20 cm in these zones. Consequently, state authorities have mandated the absolute closure of all schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centers on October 28 and 29. A heavy deployment comprising 60 ODRAF, 17 NDRF, and 225 Fire Services teams is actively positioned for swift evacuation and rescue operations. Simultaneously, relentless downpours have triggered severe waterlogging across Chennai and over 10 districts of Tamil Nadu. Cyclone danger warning signals have been hoisted at nine major ports, including Chennai, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Karaikal, Pamban, and Tuticorin. Fishermen have been strictly prohibited from venturing into the sea as authorities monitor IMD bulletins round-the-clock.
