Are Children Safe Inside? Alarming Surge in Student Abuse Exposes Deep-Seated Crisis

A massive wave of shock and concern has gripped Bangladesh following a surge in disturbing allegations of sexual abuse within the country’s Qawami madrasas. The revelations have triggered profound panic among parents, forcing many to reconsider sending their children to these religious institutions. According to human rights organizations, nearly a dozen and a half abuse complaints have surfaced against various madrasas over the last three months alone, with the Human Rights Culture Foundation (MSF) reporting that at least 13 young boys fell victim to abuse between August and September.

For years, systemic abuse and corporal punishment within these residential institutions remained hidden behind closed doors, largely suppressed by fears of institutional backlash, social stigma, and family honor. However, the silence is finally breaking. Former students like Firoz Karim have come forward to share their harrowing childhood trauma, while a dedicated online platform named ‘AwaazBD’ has allowed hundreds of victims to anonymously document their experiences, with nearly 47 percent of these reports pointing directly to Qawami madrasas.

Experts and activists point out that a stark lack of government oversight, absence of regulatory frameworks, and failure to enforce exemplary legal punishments have allowed this cycle of abuse to persist unchecked. While prominent Islamic bodies like Hefazat-e-Islam and Befaqul Madarisil Arabia have urged the formation of student protection committees and strict disciplinary actions, civil society and prominent religious scholars emphasize that absolute transparency and institutional accountability are urgently needed to protect vulnerable children from further harm.
