Unseasonal Deluge in Bengal: Low-Pressure Trough Triggers Heavy Rain; Will it Spoil the Weekend?

West Bengal is experiencing an unprecedented weather pattern this Chaitra, with a low-pressure trough stretching from Uttar Pradesh to Manipur causing continuous rainfall. According to the Alipore Met Department, massive moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal has led to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds, bringing persistent rain and gusty winds to Kolkata and surrounding districts. A ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for East Midnapore, Howrah, Hooghly, and the 24 Parganas for Thursday.

The rain has significantly cooled the city, with the minimum temperature recorded at 21.3°C—nearly 4°C below the seasonal average. Over the last 24 hours, Kolkata saw 15.2mm of rainfall. However, relief is on the horizon; weather experts predict an improvement starting Friday. By Sunday, temperatures are expected to rise by 3-4°C, leading to a drier and warmer weekend. Residents are advised to stay cautious during lightning and thunderstorms until the skies clear up.
