Super El-Nino Effect: Dramatic Weather Shift in Bengal! Temperatures Rise While Storms Hit North Bengal
West Bengal is witnessing a strange climatic duality this week as the Alipore Weather Office warns of a significant shift driven by the ‘Super El-Nino’ effect. While Northern districts are bracing for thunderstorms and high-velocity winds, the Southern part of the state, including Kolkata, is experiencing a steady rise in temperatures. Today, Kolkata is expected to see a maximum temperature of around 34°C, with partial cloud cover adding to the humidity.
In North Bengal, a yellow alert has been issued for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar. Winds gusting up to 40-50 kmph along with lightning are expected in isolated areas. Higher reaches of Sikkim are also likely to receive fresh snowfall. After a brief lull, the intensity of rain in North Bengal is set to increase starting this Sunday evening.
As for South Bengal, rain is likely to intensify from Monday in districts like Bankura, Purulia, Birbhum, and the Bardhaman region. Although Kolkata has recorded zero rainfall in the last 24 hours, the minimum temperature has touched 25°C, making the mornings feel warmer than usual. Meteorologists suggest that the “Super El-Nino” will likely lead to an early and harsh summer for the state, with the next 48 hours being crucial as the humidity-laden winds interact with the rising heat to trigger sporadic rain.
