‘Rising Heat Means Rising Demand!’ PM Modi Unveils India’s Blueprint to Tackle Power Surge in Lok Sabha

As early summer temperatures begin to shatter records across India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha on Monday, focusing on the inevitable surge in electricity demand. Acknowledging the concerns regarding potential power shortages during the peak heatwave months, the Prime Minister assured the nation that the government is fully equipped to handle the increased load without disrupting civilian life.

“As the mercury rises, so will the demand for power. It is a natural progression of a growing economy,” PM Modi stated. He highlighted India’s transformative journey from a power-deficit nation in 2014 to a power-surplus one in 2026. According to the Prime Minister, the electricity shortage, which stood at over 4% a decade ago, has been brought down to a negligible 0.03%. He emphasized that meticulous planning has ensured that thermal power plants maintain adequate coal reserves to meet the expected peak demand of over 250-270 GW.

The Prime Minister also underscored the role of renewable energy in safeguarding India’s future. He proudly noted that nearly 50% of India’s installed capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources. “Through schemes like the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, we are turning households into power producers, not just consumers,” he added. Despite global geopolitical tensions in West Asia threatening fuel supplies, PM Modi reassured that India’s strategic diversification of energy imports has insulated the national grid from external shocks.

Focusing on the solution, the Prime Minister called for a ‘whole-of-government’ approach to energy efficiency. He mentioned that massive investments in transmission infrastructure and the rollout of smart meters are crucial steps toward reducing losses and ensuring grid stability. By addressing the Lok Sabha today, PM Modi sent a clear message: while the heatwave presents a challenge, India’s power sector is resilient, modernized, and ready to keep the lights on for every citizen.
