In a major breakthrough for India’s energy sector, scientists at the CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) in Pune have developed a viable alternative to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The new fuel, known as Dimethyl Ether (DME), is being hailed as a revolutionary step towards making Indian kitchens self-reliant and significantly reducing the cost of cooking fuel for common citizens.

DME is a clean-burning, non-toxic fuel that can be synthesized from domestic resources like coal and bio-waste. Currently, India imports a vast portion of its LPG requirement, making the domestic market vulnerable to global price fluctuations and geopolitical tensions. Scientists emphasize that by blending DME with LPG or using it as a standalone fuel, the cost per cylinder could drop by as much as 40-50%, making it highly affordable for the masses.

One of the most significant advantages of DME is its compatibility. It can be used with existing LPG infrastructure and stoves with minimal modifications. Initial pilot tests have shown that a 20% DME blend is exceptionally efficient and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels. As the government moves towards commercializing this “Make in India” technology, the days of skyrocketing gas bills may soon be over, marking a new era of energy sovereignty for the nation.
