No Mobiles Allowed in Polling Booths! ECI Issues Strict Guidelines for Bengal Elections 2026
As West Bengal gears up for the 2026 Assembly Elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the official dates: April 23 and April 29. While political parties are intensifying their campaigns, the ECI has laid out a stringent set of rules for voters to ensure a fair and transparent polling process. The most significant highlight is the total ban on mobile phones inside polling stations.
Strict Ban on Electronic Devices To maintain the secrecy of the ballot, voters are strictly prohibited from carrying mobile phones, cameras, or any smart gadgets into the polling booth. According to ECI officials, any violation of this rule could lead to immediate legal action or cancellation of the vote. Voters are advised to leave their devices at home or with a trusted person outside the restricted zone.
Mandatory Identification and Conduct Voters must carry a valid photo identity proof. While the Voter ID (EPIC) is the primary document, alternatives like Aadhaar, PAN card, or Driving License are also accepted. The ECI has also emphasized that no political symbols or slogans should be displayed within 100 meters of the booth. For the convenience of senior citizens and Persons with Disabilities (PwD), special queues and wheelchair facilities will be provided at all locations.
Security and Monitoring With the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct, security has been beefed up across the state. For the first time, widespread webcasting will be used to monitor polling activities in real-time. Central forces will be stationed at every booth to ensure a peaceful environment. Voters are encouraged to check their names on the updated electoral roll before the polling day to avoid any last-minute hurdles.
