ndian Railway Breaks Records: Sevoke-Rangpo Rail Project Hits Massive Milestone!
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is making rapid strides toward completing one of India’s most challenging and ambitious engineering feats: the Sevoke-Rangpo Rail Project. This project, which aims to connect Sikkim with the national railway network for the first time, has achieved a significant milestone in its construction phase. Overcoming the treacherous Himalayan terrain, the railway authorities have announced that several critical tunnel breakthroughs have been successfully executed.
Spanning approximately 45 kilometers, the Sevoke-Rangpo line is a masterpiece of modern engineering, featuring 14 tunnels and 13 major bridges. Interestingly, nearly 38 kilometers of this route pass through tunnels, making it one of the most underground-heavy rail links in the world. The recent progress in the tunneling work signifies that the project has moved out of its most difficult phase and is now heading toward final track-laying and signaling installations.
Once operational, this rail link will serve as a game-changer for the North-Eastern region. It will provide an all-weather, reliable transportation route to Sikkim, drastically reducing travel time from Siliguri to Rangpo. Beyond enhancing tourism and boosting the local economy, the project holds immense strategic importance for national security, facilitating smoother logistics near the international borders. The Indian Railway is working tirelessly to ensure that the “Toy Train” region of North Bengal soon witnesses the arrival of high-speed connectivity to the peaks of Sikkim.
