Fire in the Kitchen, Resilience in Hearts! Shramajibi Canteen Battles Gas Crisis to Feed the Poor!

The ‘Shramajibi Canteen’ (Laborer’s Canteen), which has become a lifeline for hundreds of marginalized people, is facing one of its toughest battles yet. Known for providing affordable and nutritious meals to the needy, this grassroots initiative is currently grappling with a severe LPG (cooking gas) crisis. The rising costs of fuel and intermittent supply issues have threatened to extinguish the flames of this community kitchen, but the spirit of the organizers remains unbroken.

Volunteers of the canteen have stated that providing food to the ‘ribs’—a local metaphor for the hungry and destitute—is a non-negotiable commitment. Despite the logistical nightmares and the financial burden imposed by the gas shortage, they are determined to ensure that not a single person goes home on an empty stomach. “We have faced many storms, and this gas crisis is just another obstacle. Our mission is to serve the people, and we will find a way,” said one of the lead coordinators.

If the LPG crisis persists, the organizers are even considering shifting to traditional wood-fired stoves or coal to keep the kitchen running. This canteen has long been a symbol of social resistance and community bonding, standing tall during the pandemic and economic downturns. As the struggle intensifies, the Shramajibi Canteen is calling upon civil society for support, proving once again that while resources might be limited, the human will to serve is boundless. The fight to keep the stoves burning is now a fight for social dignity.
