Chaos in West Bengal; Thousands Strike for DA, Government Threatens Salary Cuts

Today, March 13, West Bengal faces a massive state-wide strike as government employees intensify their fight for long-pending Dearness Allowance (DA). Protesters, led by the ‘Sangrami Joutha Mancha’, have brought government offices and educational institutions to a standstill, with picket lines reported across the state. The agitation stems from the government’s failure to implement the Supreme Court’s mandate regarding the 25% outstanding DA payment.

The state government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy. An order from the Finance Department explicitly warns that no casual or half-day leaves will be granted. Any employee absent without a valid medical, maternity, or earned leave certification faces a ‘show-cause’ notice, potential salary deductions, and the day being marked as ‘Dies-Non’.

Beyond DA, the protesters are demanding transparent recruitment for six lakh vacant government posts and the regularisation of temporary staff. The strike has gained significant political momentum, with support from the BJP, Left Front, and central trade unions. As the state grapples with the fallout, the clash between determined employees and a firm administration raises serious questions about the continuity of public services across West Bengal.
