₹10,000 Bill for “Simple Fever”? Chennai Man’s Viral Post Slams Private Hospital Costs

A viral social media post by a Chennai resident, Prashanth Rangaswamy, has sparked an intense online debate over the soaring costs of private healthcare in India. Prashanth took to ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) to share his recent experience at a prominent private facility (Apollo Clinic) in Chennai, where he sought treatment for what he described as a “simple fever and cold.” To his utter shock, he was handed a bill of nearly ₹10,000 for primary consultation and a few tests.

Breaking down the expenses, Prashanth revealed that the hospital charged him approximately ₹9,000 for consultation and diagnostic tests, including blood work and swab tests, while medicines cost an additional ₹900. Totaling ₹9,900, the bill left him questioning the value of the service provided. “Just a simple fever… absolutely not worth it,” he wrote in his post, which quickly gained thousands of views and comments.

The post has divided the internet. While many netizens empathized with him, criticizing private hospitals for prescribing unnecessary tests and overcharging, others pointed out that corporate healthcare is inherently expensive and suggested opting for smaller neighborhood clinics for minor ailments. Nonetheless, the incident has brought the issue of transparency in medical billing and the financial burden of private healthcare back into the national spotlight, with many calling for stricter regulations on diagnostic pricing.
