Turbulence at Air India: CEO Campbell Wilson Resigns Mid-Term; Search for New Successor Begins

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has officially tendered his resignation, marking a significant leadership transition for the Tata-owned carrier. While his contract was set to run until July 2027, Wilson will now step down by September 2026. He will continue to lead the airline in the interim while the board scouts for a new chief from top global airlines.

Wilson, a veteran from Singapore Airlines, joined Air India in September 2022, just as the airline was transitioning back to the private sector. He was the architect of ‘Vihaan.AI,’ a five-year transformation plan aimed at restoring the airline’s former glory. However, his tenure has been marred by persistent operational challenges and widening financial losses in the 2024-25 fiscal year.

The resignation comes at a time when Air India is under intense regulatory pressure following the tragic aircraft accident in Ahmedabad in June 2025. Industry insiders suggest that the combination of mounting debt, increasing losses, and stringent safety audits played a key role in Wilson’s exit. As the board shifts gears, the aviation industry is keenly watching who will take the cockpit to navigate Air India through its current crisis.
