Relief from Heat? Alipore Met Office Predicts First Major Nor’wester of the Season in Bengal!
After weeks of scorching heat and high humidity, West Bengal is set to witness a dramatic shift in weather. The Alipore Meteorological Department has issued a high-priority forecast predicting the season’s first significant ‘Kalbaishakhi’ (Nor’wester) storms across the state. Due to a cyclonic circulation over the region, moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal has increased significantly, creating ideal conditions for thunderstorms.
Weather experts suggest that Kolkata and neighboring districts like South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, and Howrah will likely experience moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph. In some areas, these gusts could peak even higher, posing a risk of uprooting trees and damaging temporary structures. North Bengal districts, including Darjeeling and Kalimpong, are also expected to receive light showers.
Authorities have cautioned the public to stay indoors during the storms to avoid lightning-related accidents. Farmers have been particularly advised to protect harvested crops from potential hailstorms. While this atmospheric turbulence will bring down the mercury levels, providing much-needed respite from the heat, the administration remains on standby to tackle any emergency situations caused by the sudden weather shift.
