In a major push towards data-driven governance, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has initiated the setting up of specialized ‘Census Workstations’ across premier universities and research institutions in the country. Aimed at the upcoming 2027 Census, these workstations are designed to facilitate in-depth research using micro-data from previous censuses. This initiative is expected to provide scholars and policymakers with unprecedented insights into India’s changing demographics.

By integrating academia with administrative data, the government aims to create a robust framework for socio-economic analysis. Institutions like Delhi University, IITs, and other major central universities will house these secured facilities, where researchers can analyze patterns of migration, literacy levels, and employment trends.
