Mamata’s Pre-Poll Masterstroke! Nabanna Announces 5 New Development Boards for Backward Communities

In a major move just ahead of the high-stakes Assembly Elections, the West Bengal government has announced the formation of five new ‘Development Boards’ dedicated to the upliftment of marginalized and backward communities. The decision, approved by the State Cabinet and announced from the State Secretariat (Nabanna) on Friday, is being seen as a strategic step to address long-standing socio-economic grievances and consolidate key vote banks.

The Communities in Focus: The state administration has identified five specific communities for these separate councils: Bauri, Bagdi, Male-Kurmi, Modak, and Saha. These boards will function on the lines of existing tribal development councils in North Bengal and Junglemahal. Each board will be headed by community representatives and will be tasked with overseeing housing projects, educational grants, and infrastructure development specifically tailored for these caste groups.

Political Implications: Political analysts view this as a crucial “pre-poll gift” from Mamata Banerjee’s government. By empowering these five backward communities, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) aims to counter the opposition’s outreach in rural and semi-urban pockets of Bengal. While the government maintains that these boards are essential for inclusive growth and decentralized administration, opposition leaders have criticized the timing of the announcement, labeling it “voter appeasement” just before the Model Code of Conduct comes into force. Regardless of the criticism, the move is expected to directly impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of people across the state.
