Mamata vs Suvendu Again! Suvendu Adhikari to Challenge CM from Both Nandigram and Bhawanipore

In a lightning-fast political move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its first list of 144 candidates for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections, barely 24 hours after the poll dates were declared. The highlight of the list is Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who has been fielded from two high-stakes constituencies: his current stronghold Nandigram and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s home turf, Bhawanipore.

The Suvendu-Mamata Rematch: The decision to field Adhikari from Bhawanipore is a strategic masterstroke aimed at pinning the Chief Minister down in her own assembly segment. After his historic victory in Nandigram in 2021, Adhikari is now ready to take the battle to the heart of Kolkata. This sets the stage for the most anticipated face-off of the 2026 elections, as Bhawanipore remains the Chief Minister’s political citadel since 2011.

Key Candidates and Strategic Placements: The list also marks the return of veteran leader Dilip Ghosh to his home ground, Kharagpur (Sadar). Other prominent names include Shankar Ghosh from Siliguri, Sajal Ghosh from Baranagar, and Rudranil Ghosh from Shibpur. Firebrand leader Agnimitra Paul will contest from Asansol South, while Jitendra Tiwari has been fielded from Pandabeswar. The party has also retained faith in Deepak Kumar Halder for Diamond Harbour and Swapan Dasgupta for Rasbehari.

Message to the Electorate: By releasing the names of 144 candidates so early, the BJP has signaled its preparedness to take on the ruling TMC. The selection suggests a mix of seasoned organizational hands and popular faces from the arts and legal sectors. With Suvendu Adhikari leading the charge from two fronts, the BJP has turned the 2026 election into a direct referendum on leadership in Bengal.
