Mamata Invokes ‘Nandigram’ in LPG Crisis Meeting; Why Did the CM Warn District Magistrates?

In a high-stakes administrative meeting at Nabanna focused on the ongoing LPG shortage, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a startling reference to ‘Nandigram.’ While discussing the supply chain of cooking gas, the Chief Minister unexpectedly cautioned District Magistrates (DMs) and police officials to remain extremely vigilant, drawing a parallel with the historic unrest in Nandigram. Her remarks have sent ripples through the bureaucratic circles of the state.

The Chief Minister reportedly warned that any administrative mishandling of the public’s frustration over the fuel crisis could lead to a volatile situation similar to the 2007 Nandigram agitation. “Remember, when common people are deprived of essentials, their anger can turn the tide. Do not let the situation escalate like Nandigram,” she reportedly told the officials. By invoking Nandigram, Mamata Banerjee aimed to highlight how administrative apathy or the use of force against agitated citizens can lead to long-term political and social consequences.

She strictly instructed the DMs to ensure that no police action is taken against those queuing up for gas cylinders. Instead of a heavy-handed approach, she suggested proactive communication and humanitarian management. The CM expressed concern that if the gas crisis isn’t resolved swiftly at the grassroots level, it might become a catalyst for widespread civil unrest. Her warning serves as a reminder to the 2026 administration that the memory of past struggles remains a guiding principle in her governance, especially when it comes to managing public sentiments regarding essential commodities.
