Long Queues at SDM Offices Since 7 AM: Why are Valid ID Holders Losing Their Voting Rights?

The publication of the final voter list on February 28 has triggered widespread anxiety across West Bengal, with over 27.16 lakh names being excluded. Districts like Katwa and Bishnupur are witnessing massive crowds at Sub-Divisional offices as thousands of people rush to file tribunal applications. Many applicants expressed frustration, stating that despite possessing valid Aadhar cards, ration cards, and being on the list since 2002, their names were mysteriously deleted.

To mitigate harassment caused by the scorching heat, the Katwa sub-divisional administration has started counters at 7:00 AM instead of the usual 10:00 AM. Four separate counters are now operational under the watch of Central Forces and local police to maintain law and order. Meanwhile, in Bishnupur, elderly citizens were seen waiting in line since 6:00 AM, using umbrellas and hand fans to brave the sun.

According to Commission reports, Judicial Officers have processed nearly 60 lakh complaints, out of which 32.68 lakh were found valid. However, the 27.16 lakh individuals declared “invalid” now face a race against time to re-apply via the tribunal. With the State Assembly elections looming, the primary concern for these citizens remains whether they will be able to cast their vote at all.
