Indian Captain Dies Stranded at Sea! War Tensions Block Air Ambulance in Strait of Hormuz

The escalating conflict in the Middle East has claimed the life of a brave Indian mariner. Captain Rakesh Ranjan Singh (47), a Merchant Navy officer and resident of Ranchi, tragically passed away after being stranded in the Strait of Hormuz for nearly 20 days. His family alleges that a fatal delay in medical intervention, caused by ongoing war restrictions, led to his untimely demise.

Captain Rakesh joined the vessel ‘Awana’ on February 2. While heading towards India, the ship was forced to anchor 60 km off the Dubai coast for 18-20 days due to rising regional tensions. On March 18, when his health deteriorated, junior officers requested an air ambulance. However, permission was denied due to the volatile combat environment. He was eventually transported via boat, but the delay proved fatal; he suffered a cardiac arrest and died before reaching the hospital.

Currently, his remains are at Dubai’s Sheikh Rashid Hospital. His grieving brother, Umesh Kumar, and close friend Captain Sanjeev Kumar have urged the Central Government to expedite the repatriation of his body and provide financial aid to his two minor children and wife. This tragedy highlights the grave risks and lack of emergency medical support faced by Indian seafarers working in high-conflict international waters.
