Illegal Luxury Villa on Singur Farmland? Minister Indranil Sen Sued in Calcutta High Court

Singur, the historic site of the land movement that catapulted Mamata Banerjee to power, is back in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. A major controversy has erupted as a petition has been filed in the Calcutta High Court alleging that West Bengal’s Minister for Tourism, Indranil Sen, has constructed a massive, luxury bungalow on fertile agricultural land in Singur. The property, reportedly registered in the name of the Minister’s wife, is being termed as a blatant violation of land laws.

Violation of Land Norms: The petitioners have alleged that the construction stands on land that was returned to unwilling farmers following a Supreme Court landmark judgment. Under the existing Land Reform Acts, fertile agricultural land cannot be converted into permanent concrete structures for residential or commercial luxury. The plea further suggests that local authorities turned a blind eye to the construction despite it being a clear breach of administrative protocol and environmental norms.

Political Implications: The Singur movement is the emotional and political cornerstone of the Trinamool Congress. The irony of a sitting Minister allegedly occupying that very land for private luxury has given the opposition fresh ammunition. Rival political parties like the BJP and CPI(M) have labeled this as the “ultimate betrayal” of the farmers who fought for their soil. They are demanding an immediate probe into the assets and a demolition of the structure.

Judicial Intervention: The Calcutta High Court has accepted the case, and a hearing is expected in the coming week. Legal experts believe that if the allegations of unauthorized land conversion are proven, the state government could face severe embarrassment. For the people of Singur, this case represents a critical test—whether the land they fought for remains a symbol of farmers’ dignity or becomes a playground for the political elite.
