‘I Have No Button to Switch Off Mics!’ Om Birla Dismisses Opposition Allegations in Lok Sabha
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has vehemently denied allegations of bias, particularly claims from Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi that opposition voices are being silenced. Following the defeat of a no-confidence motion against him via voice vote on Wednesday, Birla addressed the House on Thursday, asserting that he has acted strictly according to parliamentary procedure, providing equal time to all members.
Addressing the Mic Controversy: Responding to accusations that microphones are intentionally switched off for opposition members, Birla stated clearly, “There is no button at the Speaker’s chair to turn the microphones on or off.” He explained that under parliamentary rules, only the member whose turn it is to speak can have their microphone active.
Upholding Parliamentary Dignity: Birla emphasized that suspending members is an unpleasant duty, but it is necessary when rules are violated. Addressing incidents where members carried placards to the treasury benches, he noted that such actions compel him to intervene to uphold the dignity of the House. He also reiterated that according to Rule 377, prior approval from the Speaker is mandatory before presenting any documents, photos, or citations in the House. By thanking those who supported him, Birla reinforced his commitment to discipline and the orderly conduct of the Lok Sabha.
