Historic Move: Opposition Files Impeachment Notice Against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar

In an unprecedented event in Indian parliamentary history, opposition parties under the ‘INDIA’ bloc have filed an impeachment notice against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. A total of 193 MPs—130 from the Lok Sabha and 63 from the Rajya Sabha—have signed the motion, which alleges bias, interference in electoral fraud investigations, and disenfranchisement of voters.

The motion, spearheaded by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), lists seven specific charges against the CEC. This move follows months of sharp criticism from West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, who frequently referred to him as ‘Vanish Kumar’. According to Article 324(5) of the Constitution, removing a Chief Election Commissioner involves a rigorous process similar to the impeachment of a Supreme Court judge, requiring a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament and final approval from the President of India. This development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation between the opposition and the constitutional body.
