High Alert in North Kolkata: 48% Booths Tagged Sensitive Ahead of April 29 Polls

With the critical Assembly elections scheduled for April 29, the Election Commission has tightened its grip on Kolkata to ensure a free and peaceful voting process. In a high-level joint press conference, North Kolkata DEO Smita Pandey and Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda outlined a robust security framework designed to thwart any electoral malpractice.

According to official data, out of the 1,835 polling booths in North Kolkata’s seven constituencies—including Jorasanko, Shyampukur, and Maniktala—nearly 48% have been flagged as sensitive. Specifically, 837 booths are labeled sensitive, while 264 are classified as ‘highly sensitive.’ Shyampukur leads the list with 80 highly sensitive booths, followed by 60 in Chowringhee.

To protect the 10.71 lakh registered voters, a massive deployment of 97 companies of Central Forces has been sanctioned for the city, with 40 companies exclusively dedicated to the North Kolkata region. “We are committed to a zero-tolerance policy against violence,” stated CP Ajay Nanda. With heavy patrolling and strict monitoring, the Commission and Kolkata Police are working in tandem to transform the election into a safe and celebratory event for the citizens.
