Heavy Rains and Gusty Winds; Is Your City on the Alert List?
Following Sunday’s stormy weather, the Alipore Meteorological Department has predicted continued turbulent conditions across West Bengal this Monday. Intense spells of rain and gusty winds are expected to intensify across Southern districts today.
According to the forecast, districts like East and West Bardhaman, Birbhum, and Hooghly face potential ‘Kalbaishakhi’ (Nor’wester) conditions, with wind speeds likely to reach up to 70 kmph. Scattered hailstorms are also predicted in these regions. Murshidabad, Nadia, and North 24 Parganas are expected to experience significant rainfall. In Kolkata, the sky will remain overcast throughout the day, with a high probability of thunderstorms towards the evening.
In North Bengal, regions including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar are under alert for thunderstorms accompanied by winds blowing at 40-50 kmph.
The sudden rainfall has brought a welcome dip in temperatures. Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 23.2°C, while yesterday’s maximum was 30.6°C. While a brief respite from the weather is expected on Wednesday and Thursday, the Met Office warns that a new spell of thunderstorm activity will likely commence from Friday onwards. Residents are advised to stay updated and exercise caution during these spells of inclement weather.
