Election Commission’s ‘Micro-Planning’! Observer Count to Double for 2026 Bengal Polls
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has unveiled a robust plan to strengthen security and administrative oversight for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. Led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the commission is set to significantly increase the number of General and Police Observers, with projections suggesting a near-doubling of personnel compared to the 2021 elections.
The commission’s strategy involves dedicated ‘General Observers’ for every assembly segment and is exploring the appointment of a specific ‘Police Observer’ for each of the 294 constituencies. Expenditure Observers are also being deployed in greater numbers to monitor candidate spending. The commission has already appointed 294 Returning Officers across the state.
Addressing concerns regarding potential irregularities, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar made it clear that any negligence or intentional errors in the election process will be met with strict disciplinary action. While the commission has played down opposition concerns regarding law and order, the shift toward “micro-planning” indicates a high-alert approach to ensure complete transparency. Sensitive zones may even see the deployment of multiple police observers to maintain order. This aggressive monitoring strategy has already become the primary talking point in the state’s political arena.
