EC Cracks Down! Basanti Police Station IC Suspended Over Failure to Control Violence

In a decisive move to uphold law and order ahead of the elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has suspended Abhijit Pal, the Inspector-in-Charge (IC) of Basanti Police Station in South 24 Parganas. The officer was suspended late Friday evening on charges of dereliction of duty and failure to maintain peace following series of violent clashes between supporters of the TMC and the BJP in the region. The commission has ordered that the suspension takes effect immediately and a departmental inquiry be initiated against him.

Background of the Conflict The Basanti area has been on the boil for several days due to political friction. Reports of crude bomb explosions, vandalism, and physical assaults between rival party workers had made the area highly volatile. Opposition parties had lodged several formal complaints with the ECI, alleging that the local police were acting as passive observers and failing to arrest known miscreants. After reviewing the reports from the observers and local administration, the ECI concluded that the IC had failed to take preemptive measures to curb the escalating violence.

A Warning to Officialdom The suspension of IC Abhijit Pal serves as a stern warning to the entire state police machinery. The Election Commission intends to demonstrate its zero-tolerance policy toward administrative bias or negligence during the electoral process. The ECI has directed the state authorities to appoint a neutral officer to take charge of the Basanti station immediately. While the ruling TMC has yet to offer an official statement, the BJP has hailed the decision as a step toward ensuring a free and fair poll in the sensitive South 24 Parganas belt.
