Double Tremors Strike! Manipur Jolted by 4.3 Quake, Kolkata Shakes as 5.5 Magnitude Hits Bangladesh

Tectonic instability continues to haunt the Indian subcontinent as multiple regions were rocked by significant earthquakes today. Early Tuesday, Manipur’s Moirang region experienced a 4.3 magnitude quake at a depth of 50 km, centered near the Kamjong district. This marks the second tremor in the area following a 3.8 magnitude shock on March 18.

However, the afternoon brought even greater panic to Eastern India. At approximately 1:22 PM, Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal were jolted by a powerful tremor. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake measured 5.5 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located just 26 km southwest of Khulna, Bangladesh. High-rise buildings in Kolkata’s IT hubs and residential complexes swayed visibly, forcing thousands to evacuate into open spaces.

These incidents follow a massive scare earlier this month in Delhi-NCR and North India, where tremors were felt from Noida to Jammu & Kashmir. Geologists are closely monitoring the frequent shifts in the Bengal Basin and the North-Eastern fault lines. While no immediate casualties have been reported, the recurring seismic activity has triggered widespread anxiety across the nation, prompting local authorities to issue safety protocols for high-risk zones.
