Big Relief for Parties! Election Commission Offers Free Slots on Doordarshan & Akashvani

Just a month ahead of the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections on April 23, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a major strategic move. In an official directive issued on Monday, the Commission has granted free airtime to recognized national and state political parties on Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR). This facility is aimed at ensuring a level playing field for all parties, regardless of their financial prowess.

Under this scheme, parties will be allotted specific time slots based on their past electoral performance and vote share. This will allow them to broadcast their manifestos and key messages to a wider audience without incurring any advertising costs. For smaller and regional parties, this is seen as a massive advantage, enabling them to reach remote areas where state-run media remains a primary source of information.

However, the ECI has laid down strict guidelines for these broadcasts. Every script must be pre-approved by the Commission to ensure that no inflammatory, communal, or defamatory content is aired. Personal attacks on opponents are strictly prohibited. As West Bengal prepares for its multi-phase election starting April 23, this move is expected to modernize and streamline the electioneering process, bringing policy-based discussions to the forefront of the public discourse.
