In a significant move to decentralize administration and bring governance closer to the doorstep of citizens, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced the creation of 7 new districts. This strategic decision will increase the total number of districts in the state from 23 to 30. The proposed new districts include Ichamati, Bishnupur, Ranaghat, Basirhat, Sundarbans, Berhampore, and Kandi.

The Chief Minister emphasized that larger districts often pose a challenge for residents who have to travel long distances to access basic government services. By carving out smaller, more manageable districts, the administration aims to ensure faster grievance redressal, better law enforcement, and more focused developmental projects. The long-standing demand of the people in Sundarbans and Ichamati for separate district status has finally been addressed through this announcement.

Parallel to the district formation, the Chief Minister also unveiled her ambitious “Mission Mahanagar” project. Under this initiative, 25 major towns across West Bengal will be transformed into modern urban hubs. The focus will be on upgrading drainage systems, enhancing public transport, and expanding green spaces to improve the quality of life for urban dwellers.

Political observers view this as a “Masterstroke” ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, aiming to streamline rural and urban governance simultaneously. The state government has already initiated the process of demarcating boundaries and identifying sites for new administrative headquarters. This massive restructuring is expected to create numerous job opportunities within the government sector and boost local economies by attracting investments in infrastructure.

With these dual announcements, Mamata Banerjee has set a clear roadmap for a “New Bengal,” prioritizing administrative efficiency and urban modernization.
