AI Enters the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Surya Kant Plans Tech-Driven Reform in Case Management
The Indian Supreme Court is set to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance administrative efficiency. According to reports from ‘Bar and Bench’, Chief Justice Surya Kant is planning to integrate AI into the judicial process to address systemic irregularities.
Why AI in the Supreme Court? Recent internal reviews within the Registry revealed discrepancies in the case listing process and bench allocation. Issues such as cases being listed multiple times in different benches and the use of outdated technology led to operational inefficiencies. The AI system will primarily be deployed to:
- Automate the case listing process.
- Ensure transparent and objective distribution of benches.
Will AI Replace Judges or Lawyers? Clarifying misconceptions, experts note that AI is not intended to replace judges in delivering verdicts or lawyers in legal arguments. Instead, it aims to act as a technological backbone to eliminate human error and corruption in administrative tasks. The project is expected to be implemented on a trial basis to ensure the judicial process becomes faster, more predictable, and transparent. While an official announcement is awaited, this move marks a significant step toward the digital modernization of India’s highest court.
