In a major step to bolster maritime surveillance and security, the Ministry of Defence signed a key agreement with US firm General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc (GA-ASI) on Monday, August 17. Under the contract, two MQ-9B Sea Guardian High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems will be leased to the Indian Navy for 30 months, with an estimated deal value of approximately ₹1,943 crore.

Equipped with advanced sensors, state-of-the-art systems, and advanced payloads, these drones can fly at high altitudes for extended durations to monitor vast oceanic stretches. They will play a crucial role in Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations—enhancing real-time tracking of potential threats, illegal activities, smuggling, and unauthorized movements in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Defense experts highlight the lease model as a key feature, offering swift technology integration compared to lengthy procurement cycles. The 30-month operational window allows the Indian Navy to gain hands-on operational experience, train personnel, and evaluate future fleet expansion or co-production under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives. Amid growing strategic competition and China’s expanding naval presence in the IOR, this acquisition bridges a critical high-altitude endurance gap and reinforces India’s maritime posture.
