Relief from Heat? Monsoon-like Conditions in Bengal, but Temperature Spike Awaits Next Week

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a statewide alert for thunderstorms and rain today, April 9. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata, a trough line stretching from Uttar Pradesh to Manipur and a cyclonic circulation over Chhattisgarh have created ideal conditions for lightning and rain. Moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring moderate showers to Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and the 24 Parganas today.
North Bengal is likely to face harsher conditions, with Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar expecting winds up to 50 km/h and heavy rainfall until April 14. For South Bengal, the weather will likely clear up by April 11, but a subsequent rise in temperature by 4-6°C is predicted. Fishermen have been advised to stay away from the West Bengal and North Odisha coasts for the next 24 hours, as wind speeds may hit a dangerous 60 km/h.
