Desi ‘Bunker Buster’: India to Empower IAF with 1000kg Indigenous Bombs to Rival US MK-84!

In a major boost to the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) combat capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has unveiled an ambitious plan to induct indigenous 1,000 kg aerial bombs. Under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, these bombs are designed to match the destructive power of the legendary American MK-84. The most significant advantage is their universal compatibility, allowing them to be deployed from both Russian-origin Sukhoi-30 MKI and French-made Rafale or Mirage fighter jets.
The ministry has already issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) for this project, which will be executed in two phases. The first phase focuses on the design and development of six prototypes, while the second phase involves a massive tender for 600 bombs. Under the DAP 2020 Make-II category, a minimum of 50% indigenous content is mandatory, opening doors for Indian startups and MSMEs. Currently reliant on foreign markets for heavy-duty ordnance, this project will secure India’s strategic independence within the next 2.5 years, transforming the nation into a global defence hub.
