Is Your Name Still on the List? 27 Lakh Voters Marked ‘Illegal’ in Bengal; Commission Releases Final Data

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming electoral cycles, the Election Commission has released a revised list of deleted voters in West Bengal. Out of over 60 lakh names under adjudication, nearly 91 lakh entries were scrutinized across the state. The final report reveals a massive cleanup, with Murshidabad witnessing the highest number of deletions.
Judicial officers reviewed 60,06,675 complaints, out of which 59,84,512 have been resolved so far. The audit confirmed 32,68,119 as valid voters, while a staggering 27,16,393 individuals were identified as ‘illegal’ due to faulty documentation. In Murshidabad alone, 4,55,137 voters were removed from the rolls. Percentage-wise, Nadia topped the list of illegal entries, with over 2.08 lakh out of 2.67 lakh reviewed cases being marked as invalid.
Other districts like North 24 Parganas (3.25 lakh), South 24 Parganas (2.22 lakh), and East Burdwan (over 2 lakh) also saw significant deletions. In Cooch Behar, over 45% of the reviewed documents were found to be illegal. The Election Commission has announced that those identified as illegal—numbering over 27 lakh—will have the opportunity to appeal before the tribunal to restate their citizenship or residency claims. More names might be added to the deletion list once the pending e-signature processes are finalized.
