“Some People Are Feeling the Heat!” Sukanta Majumdar Defends Fielding Abhaya’s Mother from Panihati

The nomination of the mother of the RG Kar victim (referred to as ‘Abhaya’) as the BJP candidate for the Panihati constituency has sparked a massive political row in West Bengal. Responding to the criticism from the TMC and the Left, State BJP President Sukanta Majumdar stated that those who failed to provide justice for the daughter of Bengal are now feeling “envious and insecure” about her mother’s entry into the electoral fray.

Sukanta Majumdar asserted, “A mother has decided to take her fight for justice to the floor of the Assembly. Why are the ruling party and the Left so agitated? It is because they know that when she stands in front of them in the House, they will have no answers to her questions.” He further added that the critics who question her candidacy are the same people who tried to suppress the movement for justice in its early stages.

The BJP has made the RG Kar tragedy a central theme of its 2026 campaign, and fielding the victim’s mother from Panihati—a key seat in North 24 Parganas—is seen as a strategic and emotional move. While the TMC labeled the decision “unfortunate” and “opportunistic,” Majumdar’s aggressive defense signals that the BJP is prepared to turn the Panihati contest into a referendum on women’s safety and the state government’s handling of the 2024 tragedy.
