Massive Avalanche Alert in Sikkim! High Alert for Nathula, Zuluk, and Gnathang Valley; Tourists Being Evacuated

The pristine landscape of Sikkim has turned into a danger zone as authorities have sounded a “High Alert” following severe avalanche warnings from the Defense Geoinformatics Research Establishment (a wing of DRDO). The prediction suggests a high probability of massive snow slides in the high-altitude regions of East and North Sikkim, specifically targeting tourist hotspots like Nathula Pass, Zuluk, and Gnathang Valley.
Administrative Measures and Safety Protocols: The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) has warned that areas above 3,500 meters are currently highly unstable due to erratic weather patterns. In response, the administration, alongside the Indian Army, has initiated emergency evacuation procedures to relocate tourists and residents from vulnerable zones to safer shelters. Key routes connecting Gangtok to Tsomgo Lake and the Indo-China border at Nathula have been temporarily suspended to prevent any casualties.
Why the Threat is Severe: Persistent heavy snowfall over the last few days, coupled with unseasonal rainfall, has compromised the stability of accumulated snow on steep Himalayan slopes. Many roads, including the stretches between Lachen and Thangu, are already blocked under several feet of snow, leaving many travelers stranded in local hotels. The meteorological department predicts that while weather may show slight improvement by Sunday evening, the risk of avalanches remains potent. Tourists are strictly advised to follow official advisories and avoid trekking or traveling to high-risk altitudes until the situation stabilizes.
