“The Centre is Jealous of Bengal!” Mamata Slams Modi Govt for ‘Derailing’ the Law

The political battle for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections reached a boiling point today, March 20, 2026, as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government. While releasing the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) manifesto, Banerjee accused the Modi administration of being “jealous” of West Bengal’s progress and systematically “derailing” the legal and constitutional framework of the country to target the state.
“The Centre is relentlessly targeting Bengal because they cannot digest our success. They have turned the rule of law into a mockery,” she stated. Mamata further alleged that the state is currently under an “unofficial President’s Rule,” citing the recent wave of administrative transfers by the Election Commission. She characterized these moves as a “deliberate design” to seize control of the state through coercion rather than democratic mandate.
The Chief Minister also raised alarms over the BJP’s alleged plans for NRC and delimitation after the elections, calling them tools of mass disenfranchisement. She accused the BJP of bringing “money, weapons, and border mafias” to incite unrest in the state. Framing the 2026 election as a battle for the soul of the nation, Mamata asserted that the people of Bengal would reject the “politics of hate and division.” Her fierce rhetoric sets the stage for a high-intensity showdown where the TMC positions itself as the lone defender against what she calls the “autocratic interference” of the central government.
