Today or After Eid? The Countdown Begins for Bengal’s Pending Voters; EC Races Against Time

With the West Bengal Assembly Elections just around the corner, a dark cloud of uncertainty hangs over the release of the supplementary voter list. Approximately 60 lakh ‘pending’ voters are anxiously waiting to know if they will be able to exercise their franchise. While administrative hints suggested a release by Thursday or Friday, the lack of an official announcement has sparked intense speculation across the state.

Thursday witnessed a series of high-stakes meetings, starting with an urgent call from Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Sujoy Pal. The Home Secretary, DGP Siddhinath Gupta, and the Kolkata Police Commissioner were present to discuss law and order alongside the list’s preparation. Later, CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal and Chief Secretary Dushyant Narwal held further discussions, yet no definitive timeline emerged. The repeated rounds of talks without a final verdict have only heightened the anxiety.

According to Election Commission sources, only about 24 lakh pending cases have been verified and resolved so far, leaving a massive chunk of voters in the lurch. With polling scheduled for April 23 and 29, and results on May 4, any further delay in publishing the supplementary list could lead to significant administrative and political turmoil. All eyes are now on Friday—will the list be unveiled today, or will the wait extend until after Eid? Bengal remains on edge.
