Are Mobile Networks Next? LPG Shortage Threatens India’s 5G Expansion and Digital Connectivity
The escalating tensions between Iran, Israel, and the U.S. are reaching beyond gas cylinders, threatening India’s digital backbone. The Digital Infrastructure Providers Association (DIPA) has warned that persistent fuel shortages could lead to widespread disruptions in mobile networks and internet services across the country.
Why Telecoms are at Risk: LPG and LNG are vital components of India’s digital ecosystem:
- Generator Backups: Many cell towers and data centres rely on LPG as a primary fuel backup during power outages.
- Tower Manufacturing: The galvanization process used to build telecom towers requires constant fuel supply. With energy companies prioritizing domestic LPG, tower manufacturing units have faced significant supply cutbacks.
The Potential Impact: The industry warns of a cascade effect:
- Operational Costs: Switching to alternative energy sources will drive up operational costs for telcos.
- Network Failures: Prolonged power outages without fuel backup could lead to signal blackouts in remote regions.
- Digital Stagnation: The 5G expansion and new tower installations could come to a standstill.
Beyond communication, this impacts national security, online financial transactions, and telemedicine services. DIPA has urged the Ministry of Telecommunications to exempt telecom infrastructure units from fuel distribution restrictions and to prioritize power supply to mobile towers to ensure India’s digital future remains secure.
