Zero Tolerance for Booth Capturing! ECI’s Major Crackdown for Bengal Assembly Polls 2026

In a bid to ensure a free and fair electoral process for the upcoming 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a series of stringent high-tech measures. Learning from past controversies regarding booth capturing and proxy voting, the Commission has made it clear that any instance of malpractice will lead to the immediate cancellation of votes at that specific booth.
Technological Surveillance: The ECI has mandated 100% Webcasting in every polling station across the state. This real-time live-streaming will allow officials in Delhi and Kolkata to monitor the internal environment of booths directly. If any unauthorized person enters or an agent is forcibly removed, the Commission can act instantly based on live footage.
GPS-Enabled Logistics: To eliminate any possibility of EVM tampering during transit, the ECI has ordered the installation of GPS tracking devices in all Sector Officers’ vehicles. This will ensure that EVMs move only along pre-approved routes and reach their designated strongrooms without any detour. Any deviation from the assigned path will trigger an automated alert in the central monitoring room.
Strict Penalties: The Commission’s “Zero Tolerance” policy implies that re-polling will be ordered immediately if there is concrete evidence of rigging. District officials have been directed to ensure that central forces maintain a strict perimeter. With these digital safeguards in place, the Election Commission aims to curb electoral violence and restore public confidence in the voting process. Political analysts view this as a significant move that could alter the ground realities of election day in Bengal.
