Defence sources have confirmed that the airframe of this sophisticated machine is engineered for an operational life of 6,000 to 8,000 flight hours, ensuring long-term strategic security for the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The heart of the Tejas Mk-2 is the powerful General Electric F414-INS6 engine, capable of generating 98 kN of thrust. This massive power upgrade allows the aircraft to carry a payload of 6.5 tonnes\u2014nearly double that of the Tejas Mk-1A. With 14 hardpoints, the jet can simultaneously deploy a combination of indigenous &#8216;Astra&#8217; Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles and the miniaturized BrahMos-NG cruise missiles. This makes it a versatile platform capable of air superiority, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions across diverse terrains, from the high-altitude Himalayas to maritime borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technologically, the Mk-2 integrates the indigenous &#8216;Uttam&#8217; AESA Radar and an advanced Electronic Warfare (EW) suite, significantly reducing its radar cross-section and making it harder for enemies to detect. DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat has indicated that the maiden flight of this ambitious project is expected by June-July 2026. The IAF plans to induct between 120 and 210 units to replace its aging fleet of Mirage-2000s, Jaguars, and MiG-29s.
