The violence erupted on Saturday afternoon as BJP workers were heading toward the Brigade Parade Ground for Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s rally. Following the chaos and a direct attack on the residence of State Minister Shashi Panja, the Kolkata Police have so far arrested 9 individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The confrontation reportedly began over the tearing of political banners, which quickly escalated into a full-blown street battle with both sides pelting stones at each other. Minister Shashi Panja alleged that a mob of BJP supporters intentionally targeted her house, shattering window panes and pelting bricks while she was inside. &#8220;They are not political workers; they are murderers,&#8221; the minister claimed, reporting injuries to herself and several party activists. Conversely, the BJP leadership alleged that the TMC orchestrated an unprovoked attack to prevent their supporters from reaching the rally venue, resulting in injuries to several of their cadres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kolkata Police have registered a suo motu case at the Girish Park Police Station. While 4 persons were apprehended on Saturday night, the arrest toll increased to 9 by Sunday morning as raids continued across the locality. Among the injured are 8 police personnel, including the Officer-in-Charge of Bowbazar Police Station, who was struck by a stone while trying to control the mob. Huge police contingents and RAF units have been deployed in the sensitive Girish Park-Chittaranjan Avenue stretch to maintain order.
