“What is the Contribution of Gujaratis?” Mahua Moitra’s Remark Sparks Fury, TMC Issues Apology

TMC MP Mahua Moitra has landed in the eye of a political storm after questioning the contribution of Gujaratis to India’s freedom struggle. During a campaign event for the 2026 Assembly elections, Moitra’s remarks comparing Bengali and Gujarati legacies drew sharp criticism from the BJP. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari slammed the statement as a “direct insult to Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.”

As the controversy escalated, the Trinamool Congress moved quickly to damage control. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh stated that the remarks were Moitra’s “personal opinion” and did not reflect the party’s official stance. While the TMC offered an apology to prevent regional backlash, the BJP has seized the opportunity to label the ruling party as “anti-national” and “divisive.” This linguistic and regional row is expected to become a major talking point in the upcoming electoral battle.
