UCC, 2 Lakh Jobs & Flood-Free Assam! Nirmala Sitharaman Unveils BJP’s Masterstroke for April 9 Polls

Ahead of the high-stakes Assam Assembly Elections scheduled for April 9, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its election manifesto, titled ‘Sankalp Patra,’ in Guwahati on Tuesday. Unveiled by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the document outlines 31 ambitious commitments aimed at transforming the state into a regional powerhouse. The cornerstone of the manifesto is a massive ₹5 lakh crore investment plan for infrastructure development, designed to position Assam as India’s “Eastern Gateway” under the Asom Gati Shakti Master Plan.

Identity and security remain at the forefront of the BJP’s electoral agenda. The party has pledged the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, while excluding tribal areas protected under the Sixth Schedule. To protect indigenous land rights, the manifesto promises a relentless crackdown on illegal encroachments and the enactment of strict laws against “Love Jihad” and “Land Jihad.” Furthermore, a dedicated ‘Badh Mukt Assam Mission’ with an initial outlay of ₹18,000 crore has been promised to tackle the state’s chronic flooding issue.

On the socio-economic front, the BJP has promised 2 lakh additional government jobs and financial support for 10 lakh youth under self-employment schemes. For women, the monthly Orunodoi assistance is set to be hiked to ₹3,000. Other significant highlights include the “One District, One University” initiative and a strategic plan to develop Dibrugarh as Assam’s second capital. Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized that the BJP has brought peace and stability to a region once plagued by AFSPA and insurgency, contrasting it with the “neglect” faced under 60 years of Congress rule. With the economy targeted to reach $150 billion by 2031, the BJP’s roadmap for 2026 focuses heavily on a blend of cultural preservation and aggressive industrial growth.
