A fatal road accident claimed the life of a truck driver and left another person critically injured in the Hasimara area of Alipurduar district on Tuesday. The horrific incident occurred on the Torsa River bridge when two heavy-duty trucks collided head-on, causing one to plunge approximately 40 feet into the riverbed.

According to local sources, a freight truck heading towards Madarihat on National Highway 31 lost control and smashed into another truck coming from the opposite direction. The impact was so massive that one of the vehicles breached the bridge’s safety railing and fell straight into the Torsa River.

Local residents immediately alerted the police, who initiated a rescue operation. While the driver was declared dead on the spot, the injured individual was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Preliminary investigations suggest that excessive speeding and the failure to control the vehicle led to this catastrophe. The police have recovered the body for post-mortem and are further investigating the mechanical status of the vehicles.
