The Ghost of a Blockbuster! Ajay Devgn’s Biggest Career Disaster was a Failed Remake

Ajay Devgn, known for his versatile roles and mass appeal, has a career decorated with blockbusters. However, the 2013 release ‘Himmatwala’ stands out as the ultimate “disaster” in his storied journey. Directed by Sajid Khan, the film was a high-budget remake of the 1983 cult classic starring Jeetendra and Sridevi. Despite massive hype and bold claims by the director, the film turned out to be a nightmare for the producers and a major disappointment for the fans.
What Went Wrong? The primary reason for its downfall was the outdated 80s-style storytelling that failed to resonate with the modern audience of 2013. The film was criticized for its loud melodrama, over-the-top action, and lack of a coherent script. While the original was a trendsetter, the remake felt like a parody of the bygone era. Even the catchy “Nainon Mein Sapna” couldn’t recreate the old magic. Ajay Devgn himself later admitted in interviews that he realized the film was going off-track during the shooting itself, but it was too late to turn back.
Star-Studded Cameos Failed to Work: To add some flavor, the makers brought in Riteish Deshmukh and Chunky Panday for special cameo appearances. Riteish played the role of Ajay’s friend, whose death triggers the revenge plot, while Chunky Panday played a quirky character named Michael Jaikishan. Despite these additions and Tamannaah Bhatia’s big Bollywood debut, the film was panned by critics and audiences alike. Made on a staggering budget of approximately ₹68 crore, it barely scraped through the box office, becoming one of the most expensive and embarrassing flops in Ajay Devgn’s career.
