Tarique Rahman’s Genocide Day Message: A Direct Hit on Yunus’ Pro-Pakistan Leanings?

In a significant departure from the diplomatic tone of the previous interim administration, Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has issued a scathing message on ‘Genocide Day’ (March 25). By highlighting the brutal history of the 1971 Liberation War, Rahman has sent a clear signal that his government will not follow the “soft-pedalling” approach towards Pakistan that was allegedly observed during Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s tenure.

Recalling the Horrors of 1971: In a powerful statement, Tarique Rahman described March 25, 1971, as “one of the most disgraceful and brutal days” in the history of Bangladesh. He detailed the horrors of ‘Operation Searchlight,’ calling it a “pre-planned massacre” by the Pakistani occupation forces against unarmed civilians, students, and intellectuals. His message emphasized the need for future generations to cherish independence by remembering the blood-soaked sacrifices made to defeat the Pakistani army.

A Rejection of Yunus’ Outreach: Political analysts view this as a direct counter to the outreach made towards Islamabad during the 18-month interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus. Under Yunus, there were visible attempts to warm ties with Pakistan, including high-level military interactions. However, PM Tarique Rahman’s latest stance reaffirms a “Bangladesh First” policy, keeping Pakistan at arm’s length. By reaffirming the atrocities of 1971, Rahman has effectively dismantled the narrative of reconciliation that was being built previously, setting a firm tone for the country’s sovereign identity.
