Storm Alert in Bengal! Hailstorm and Thunderstorms Predicted Across North & South Bengal Districts

In a significant weather update, the Alipore Meteorological Department has brought a mix of relief and caution for the residents of West Bengal. As the intense heat of Chaitra sweeps across the state, a fresh spell of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rain is predicted over the next few days. Some districts are even expected to witness hailstorms, potentially lowering the mercury levels but raising concerns for agriculture.
South Bengal Update: The districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, are likely to experience scattered rainfall and squalls in the next 48 hours. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are expected in areas like Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, and the Burdwan belt. Western districts like Bankura and Purulia are also under a thunderstorm watch as convective clouds are likely to develop by late afternoon, bringing temporary respite from the humid conditions.
North Bengal Outlook: The northern part of the state will not be spared either. Sub-Himalayan districts, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri, are bracing for light to moderate rain. Malda and the Dinajpur regions are also likely to witness lightning activities. While the rain will bring a pleasant chill to the hills—much to the delight of tourists—farmers have been cautioned about possible crop damage due to localized hailstorms.
Meteorological Factors: According to weather experts, the inflow of moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal and a low-pressure trough extending from Bihar to Odisha are the primary drivers of this weather shift. While this atmospheric turbulence will provide a much-needed break from the sweltering heat, the public has been advised to stay indoors during lightning. The Alipore Met Office continues to monitor the situation as the state prepares for these pre-monsoon showers.
