“Will the Indian Cricket Team Play in the Asia Cup?” – BCCI Secretary’s Response

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has completely dismissed reports circulating about India’s non-participation in the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup and Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup as baseless. BCCI Joint Secretary Debajit Saikia clearly stated today that no final decision has yet been taken by the board on this matter.

Facing reporters, Debajit Saikia said, “This morning, some news reports came to our attention claiming that India would not participate in the Asia Cup. This news is completely baseless.” He emphasized, “The BCCI has not yet made any decision on this matter, nor has any letter been sent to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).”

He further informed that the BCCI’s primary focus currently is on the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Indian team’s upcoming tour of England. Until these two important events conclude, discussions on other matters are unlikely. Debajit Saikia clarified that no discussions regarding the Asia Cup or any other ACC event have taken place in any BCCI meeting so far. He also stated that there is no possibility of a final decision on India’s participation in the Asia Cup until the IPL concludes.

The 2025 Asia Cup for men is scheduled to be in the T20 format. Several countries, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, are expected to participate. The Asia Cup is primarily considered a preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Previously, various media outlets had reported that India and Sri Lanka were planning to jointly host the Asia Cup 2025, but due to recent India-Pakistan border tensions, security concerns, and Pakistan’s aggressive stance, India had reportedly decided to boycott the tournament. That news about India’s non-participation had raised questions about the future of the entire tournament. There was also extensive discussion about the financial implications of this decision and the pressure it would put on Pakistan and the ACC.

However, after today’s statement by the BCCI Joint Secretary, it is clear that any speculation about India’s participation in the Asia Cup is not yet true, and a final decision on the matter will be taken at the appropriate time. Until an official announcement is made by the BCCI, any news will be considered mere speculation.
