Saudi cricket: New challenge in Malaysia T20I series

The Saudi Arabia men’s cricket team will take on Thailand, Singapore and hosts Malaysia in the Malaysia Quadrangular T20I Series 2025 starting today (April 24). The Saudi cricket team will take on Thailand at 10 am at the Bayumas Oval, followed by a match between Malaysia and Singapore at 2 pm. Each team will play two matches against the others, and the top teams will advance to the final on May 2. “Our goal is to improve the ICC rankings and perform consistently,” Saudi coach Hisham Sheikh said.

Saudi cricket recently made headlines by defeating UAE by 11 runs in the Gulf T20I Championship in December 2024. Usman Khalid (185 runs) and Faisal Khan (166 runs, 13 sixes) made a splash with the bat, while Usman Najib took 10 wickets. Saudi Arabia strengthened its path to 2025 Asia Cup qualification by winning the ACC Men’s Challenger Cup in February 2024. Cricket analyst Rashid Ali said, “Saudi’s confidence and aggressive batting makes them strong contenders.” However, Saudi (32nd) has an edge against Thailand (55th) compared to Malaysia (26th) and Singapore (38th).

Parallel, the Saudi Under-16 team will play teams like UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait in the ACC U-16 West Zone Cup in Doha from April 23 to May 5. It is a tough challenge for them after losing all the matches in March 2023. Saudi Cricket Federation official Ahmed Khan said, “This experience of young players is important for the future.” This series underlines the growing stature of Saudi cricket and their ambitions on the global stage.
